New rates for the new year

United Parcel Service, FedEx, and Airborne will be releasing their new policy, rate, and zone changes on January 5, 2004. Terno is offering the zone and rate service updates to your system as we have done in the past.

Many of you recently began using UPS Worldship processing. Although the Worldship software is automatically updated via a web connection with new changes, your TernoVelocity or Q/OP system may need a separate update.  If you are currently utilizing rates in your mail-order system for determining shipping costs to your customers or to perform reporting, you will need to participate in this update.

Order forms will be faxed out shortly but are also available from your Terno representative.  If you do not receive one in the next few days, please contact us at 330.629.7004.

New backup service

With data protection issues at an all time high, many companies are wondering if their data is safe.  Most clients perform nightly backups but what if a catastrophe occurred?  Fires and natural disasters do happen and your company must have a plan in place to protect your valuable information.

Terno & Associates is investigating a new service to backup your data remotely.  Through a secure web connection, your data is also saved on a Terno server.  In the event a problem would occur, you would have your data intact and operate temporarily via a connection to Terno headquarters.

This service can also be expanded to web server hosting.  If an electrical outage, fire, or disaster would take place, your web hosting can be rerouted to Terno.

In today's competitive environment, companies are lost without their computer system and data.  Take a minute to consider what would happen at your company without its computer system for a day.  If you would like more information on this, please contact us at info@terno.com or call Jeff Moliterno.

Last chance to reinstate your IBM contracts!

If your maintenance contract has lapsed with IBM, this is your last chance for reinstatement without penalties and additional costs. If you need support with IBM products (Universe, SB+, SB Client, RedBack), a maintenance contract must be in place for you to receive assistance.

If you should need their services and your contract is not current, you will be required to "reinstate" it at a fee of 75% of the price of the product. However, if you act before December 31, 2003, you can begin a maintenance contract by simply purchasing a 1 year agreement (no penalties or fees). This can be a tremendous cost savings illustrated by the following example: For Universe server edition users, you would pay the $72 per user maintenance contract fee. If you do not reinstate a maintenance contract and need support, you will have to pay $333.75 per user!

Maintenance contracts entitle you to IBM product support and help, version updates and the flexibility to change platforms. Previously, changing platforms (i.e. Unix to Windows) would cost your company an additional 25% of the list price of a given product. Platform changes are now free with paid maintenance.

Please call or email Terno for information related to your specific contract.

No changes to Ohio sales tax after all

Recently, Ohio clients were informed of changes in the Ohio Revised Code that would require them to collect sales tax based on the ship-to county rather than their home county. The bulletin sent out October 31, 2003, by the Ohio Department of Taxation has since been cancelled.

Ohio clients will NOT have to make changes to their systems and this change has been postponed to January 1, 2005. A special thanks goes to Phil Steiner at Mellinger’s Nursery who alerted us of the cancellation.

Terno Tip

A lock occurs when two users are trying to update the same information at the same time. You may have noticed this when a program does not respond or a record is temporarily unavailable. Logging off your port is usually not the correct answer. Instead, you should check to see if another port is accessing the same information. To do this, simply type LIST.READU EVERY (on Universe) or LIST-ITEM-LOCKS (on Mentor Pro) to view what locks exist on the system.  Once the individual is identified, you can ask them to finish their processing or wait until they are done.
