Welcome to 2004

As we start a new year, we want to take this opportunity to thank our clients for their business this past year. 2003 brought many changes for Terno & Associates and our TernoVelocity software package. With the help and suggestions of our clients, we have made a significant number of enhancements to our software product. We have continued to focus on providing the best customer service possible, including the introduction of this email newsletter to help keep you informed of what’s new here at Terno.

As 2004 starts, we continue our commitment to our clients. Later this year, we hope to unveil a new client section to our web site where you can look-up information, view documents, upload and download files relating to your system and more. We also look forward to seeing you at this year’s User Group Meeting, The National Conference on Operations & Fulfillment, and the Annual Catalog Conference.  During the course of this year, keep in mind that we welcome your thoughts, ideas for improvements, and opinions so that we can continue enhancing our products and services.  Many of the best ideas for enhancements come from our clients, so please feel free to call or email us with your suggestions.

As always we look forward to working with all of you in this New Year and hope you have a healthy and prosperous 2004!

Mostad to pursue upgrade

Congratulations to Mostad & Christensen who will be completing a hardware and database upgrade in the first quarter of 2004. They will be moving to a Dell PowerEdge 4600 server on a Windows 2000 platform. The change will require moving their existing data and programs from their existing Mentor Pro database to the Universe database.  This upgrade will provide Mostad with a much faster system, and a high level of stability and reliability.

Mostad & Christensen is a direct marketing company dedicated to serving the needs of accounting firms. Visit their web site at www.mostad.com.

Did you remember the shipping changes?

United Parcel Service, FedEx, and Airborne released their new policy, rate, and zone changes on January 5, 2004. Please take a moment to verify your rates and zones have been properly updated. For those clients using UPS Worldship, your update should have automatically taken place when you logged into the Worldship system on January 5. For Clippership users, a new version should have been downloaded from the American System Integration web site. For clients using Host Manifest Upload, you could have received an update directly from Terno or manually entered the new rates.

If you have not updated your system with the new rates, please contact us.

Results from backup investigation?

In the last issue of terno times monthly, Terno announced research of a backup service for Terno clients. This would allow a second copy of their data to be backed-up nightly at Terno headquarters enabling security in case of catastrophe. This service would allow clients to connect remotely on a temporary basis until they are able to restore their server. Furthermore, this could also be used to redirect web hosting in case of an internal power failure or problem.

We have received responses from many of you who are interested in this. We are currently putting together some pricing information on this and look forward to sharing our findings shortly.  If you are interested in this type of service but have not yet contacted us, please call Jeff or email us at info@terno.com.

Terno Tip:  Handling Bill-Of-Materials

Recently, we have had inquires on using the BOM programs in TernoVelocity.  We thought we would take this opportunity to answer some FAQs on the subject:

1. How does a BOM differ from a kit item?
Bill-Of-Material items are typically items that are "built" and placed on the shelf as a finished good ready for sale.  An example BOM item may be a picture frame your company assembles from raw goods (4 sides, 1 Backing, 1 piece of glass, 1- tube of glue would be the BOM components).  A kit is something that is typically grouped together at the time a pick ticket is generated (1 pair of pants and 1 blouse).

2.  What happens if we no longer need the BOM items that we assembled?
A "disassemble" function is available to take your finished BOM and return it to the raw components.

3.  Once we setup a BOM template, how do we put a price on the item?
Each BOM item requires a setup in the Inventory Enter/Update screen where pricing information and descriptions are entered.

4.  How is Cost Of Goods Sold computed for BOM items?
Using the same structure (FIFO) as regular items, the BOM simply adds all of the component costs to obtain the BOM cost.

5.  Can you include labor charges in the cost of the finished item?
Yes.  Simply create a component item in your BOM template for
a cost that represents your labor to build the finished item.

TCL TIP:  Using date ranges

When performing a select for date specific information, you may use the following:
GE:  Greater than or equal to
LE:   Less than or equal to
EQ:  Equal to
NE:  Not equal to

Example:
LIST SHIPPED.DAT WITH 29 GE "01/02/04" AND LE "01/07/04"
This statement lists shipped orders from 1/02/04 to 01/07/04.
